*ESL job Application Process

What are the criteria for applying?

In order to work with us as an ESL Teacher abroad in China, the following qualifications are required:

1. You must be a native English speaker (hold a passport from one of the following countries: USA, Canada, UK, Australia, South Africa or New Zealand).

2. You must possess a full university degree from an accredited institution (The length may vary from country to country, i.e. 3 or 4 year degrees are both fine).

3. Have a TEFL certificate or be willing to get TEFL certified. Most of our positions require teachers to be TEFL certified. Schools give preference to teachers with a 120-hour TEFL certificate or its equivalent.

4. Agree to a one year contract.

Additionally, we expect a high level of professionalism and dedication from all our teachers. One of our mottos at Teach for the Future is matching great teachers with great schools. We work hard to make sure you will be placed in an excellent situation. Likewise, we make sure we recruit people with great attitudes and work ethic.

I don¡¯t have any teaching experience! Does that matter?

In China, you must have a minimum of two years of work experience post-graduation. Out of those two years, you must have at least a year of formal teaching experience. You also need a TEFL or TESOL certification for most schools in China.

Do I need a TEFL or other teaching certification?

Yes. Schools and the government of China require teachers to be TEFL certified.

What if I haven¡¯t graduated yet?

If you expect to graduate in the next six months, why wait!? If you are thinking about teaching abroad, apply now. This will give you the time you need to prepare and to carefully consider all your options. We can¡¯t place you until we have a copy of your actual degree, but you can begin the process anytime.

How much will I paid?

Salaries vary depending on school and location and are typically commensurate with experience, qualifications and whether you want to take on extra classes or responsibility within your school. Overall, TEFL qualified teachers can expect to receive an average salary that ranges between RMB10,000 and RMB21,000 per month depending on experience and qualifications.

Are there any special qualifications for teaching in China?

In recent years the government in China has passed a law requiring all teachers to have at least two years of work experience after University. You must be between 22 and 55 years of age to receive a proper working Z visa. The Chinese government also requires teachers to have at least a 100-hr TEFL certification. Most provincial governments require teachers to have a 120-hour certification, so it is really in your best interest to add that extra 20 hours to your certificate if possible! Our client schools, especially in Beijing and Shanghai, have been reporting that local authorities are now turning down TEFL certificates that have ¡®online¡¯ stamped anywhere on the certificate. It is in your best interest to either choose an online course that does not have a certificate with ¡®online hours¡¯ mentioned on it, or do a classroom-based course or a combination course that includes online and classroom hours.

What is the cost of living in China£¿

The cost of living in China is considerably lower than the cost of living in the United States or the United Kingdom. Although we will include a more detailed explanation of what the cost of living is in your acceptance packet with Teach for the Future, it¡¯s worth noting that the cost of living varies depending on your location. Rural areas are much less expensive than city areas.

How is the food? Will I like it?

Different regions offer different specialties. Szechuan is known for this spicy fare while Shanghai is renowned for their ¡°small dishes¡±, like dumplings or vegetable plates. In addition to the traditional Chinese cuisine, there are some exotic and tantalizing options from chicken feet to snake. Western restaurants like McDonalds, Burger King, TGIF, and Outback Steakhouse are prevalent all throughout China as well, but be prepared for larger bills when the check arrives!

Do I need to be able to speak Chinese to teach English in China?

Being about to speak Chinese is not a requirement for teaching English in China. However, there¡¯s no harm in getting started before you go.

Can I teach for less than a year in China?

No. The schools that we work with require teachers to commit to a 12-month contract because of the time and expense involved with securing your Z visa and Foreign Expert Certificate.

Am I provided with housing?

This depends on the school you are working with. While some schools outside larger cities offer housing, most schools in the larger cities do not. However, the school will always ensure you find appropriate housing to match your salary and you will never be homeless! Apartments are typically clean and modern and are often times within walking distance to the school. Some schools offer shared accommodation with another teacher at your school, while others offer private accommodation. Your placement manager will discuss this with you before you decide to accept a teaching position.
